Buying a flagship graphics card at launch usually means paying a premium to enjoy it sooner. At least, the thinking goes, people who wait will pay less. The RTX 5090 is a reminder that the second half of that bargain is never guaranteed.

Announced at $1,999 in the United States and €2,349 in France, it went on sale on January 30, 2025. By fall 2026, some German price observations were far above those reference points. In between came shortages, more expensive partner designs, acknowledged defects and software updates that changed its capabilities. Its launch price alone tells very little of that story.

January 2025: a card designed to push the limits

On January 6, 2025, NVIDIA introduced its Blackwell generation for gamers and creators. The 5090 sat at the top. The announcement set its US price at $1,999 and availability for January 30. [3]

The French Founders Edition launch price was €2,349, as reported in TechRadar France’s January 23 review. Modified and overclocked partner cards also sold at higher prices. [4]

The announced US price excludes local sales tax; the French consumer price includes VAT.

The RTX 5090 has 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and a total graphics power rating of 575 W. [5]

For a new build, the card’s price is only the start. Check the power supply, connectors, available space and cooling for the specific model. A GPU that forces you to replace several other parts costs more than its sticker price. Someone whose existing system is already suitable may not face those extra expenses.

Early reviews put the claims in perspective

NVIDIA’s launch comparisons highlighted the combined gains from Blackwell and DLSS 4. [6]

In GamersNexus’s 4K tests, the Founders Edition led the 4090 by roughly 20–50% in rasterized games, depending on the title, and 27–35% in its ray-tracing measurements. [7]

In Multi Frame Generation 4X mode, one frame rendered by the game can be accompanied by three generated frames. Displayed motion becomes smoother while the game engine keeps its own simulation cadence. [8]

On launch day, PCWorld found sold-out listings at several US retailers. Some partner models already carried prices above the reference figure. [9]

The Founders Edition, Palit GameRock, ASUS ROG Astral and MSI Suprim share a GPU, with construction, dimensions, noise levels and pricing specific to each model.

When the cheapest versions disappear and premium models remain available, the family’s entry price rises.

February: a manufacturing fault and connector problems

On February 22, 2025, NVIDIA acknowledged a manufacturing fault affecting a small share of the relevant cards: an inactive ROP partition, a block of units involved in finishing pixels. An affected 5090 had 168 active units instead of the expected 176. [10]

NVIDIA said the production anomaly had been corrected and offered replacements through card manufacturers. The company estimated that fewer than 0.5% of GPUs from the named models were affected.

Power connectors are a separate issue. In February, Roman Hartung, known as der8auer, examined a damaged-cable case and documented uneven current distribution in his test setup. [11]

Falcon Northwest, meanwhile, said it did not reproduce those abnormal temperatures in its tests, as reported by Tom’s Hardware. [12]

Drivers and games are part of the life cycle

The first weeks also brought black-screen reports. NVIDIA tracked several of these issues in its 572.60 driver notes. [13]

On December 4, 2025, NVIDIA restored GPU-accelerated 32-bit PhysX for a selection of older games on RTX 50 cards. [14]

Features continued to change in 2026: DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution rolled out in January, followed by Dynamic Multi Frame Generation with a maximum 6X mode on March 31. [15][16]

On September 3, DLSS 5 became available in NBA 2K27 on RTX 50 GPUs. This neural-rendering feature changes the appearance of images. [17]

The card bought in January 2025 therefore continued to evolve through software updates, gaining features in supported games.

Summer 2025 to fall 2026: prices move to another level

In August 2025, NVIDIA listed a French Founders Edition recommended price of €2,099, as recorded by Frandroid on August 20. [18]

3DCenter tracks the lowest deliverable RTX 5090 price in Germany using offers listed by Geizhals. Its series covers July 2025 through October 2026. [19]

From September 2025 to October 2026, the RTX 5090’s German entry price rose from €2,319 to €6,790: an increase of €4,471, or about 193%.

ComputerBase recorded a lowest in-stock price of €5,999 on October 2, 2026. [20]

Why a card can get older without getting cheaper

Hardware buyers often assume that waiting will lower the bill. That depends on available supply. If affordable versions become scarce while buyers still accept higher prices, the GPU’s age alone cannot bring prices back down.

On October 7, 2026, ComputerBase described German availability concentrated among relatively few retailers. [21]

On October 16, Jeff Fisher told 4Gamers that NVIDIA would keep shipping the 5090 despite constrained capacity. [22]

What this history means for your purchase

For existing 5090 owners, the increase mainly makes replacing the card more expensive.

For a new purchase, compare the complete system’s cost and alternatives that meet your needs. The GPU budget should remain in proportion to the rest of the build.

For professional use, compare the additional expense with working time saved on your projects in your software.

Keep your card’s exact model and purchase price in Rigflation. You can then track its replacement cost using available dated offers.

For the rest of your build, see why PC components cost so much, how to buy a desktop PC and how to compare a prebuilt with its separate parts.
